Claudia Sheinbaum, a former mayor of Mexico City, was chosen as the presidential candidate for the ruling party, while senator Xochitl Galvez was chosen as the presidential candidate for the opposition coalition.
In order to succeed the current president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who is prohibited by the constitution from running for a second six-year term, Mexico will hold presidential elections in June 2024.
Following a series of polls conducted by members of the ruling coalition, Sheinbaum, 61, was chosen last Wednesday.

Sheinbaum is expected to have a significant advantage in June as the party’s candidate because the ruling party now controls 22 of Mexico’s 32 states.
